The Anime Apocalypse

Posted by 0rion on November 27th, 2007 - 2:40 am

Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb internet.

It’s all over. The end is nigh.

Third Impact, Haruhimageddon, Heaven’s Gate, the Anti-Spiral Apocalypse, the Wrath of the Ohmu, the Coming of Akira – call it whatever you want, but the message is clear.

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and anime is dead.

Much like the aforementioned “bomb” of Dr. Strangelove fame, the internet is the delivery mechanism that provides the offensive capability to strike all over the world, fansubbers and pirates are the nuclear payload that it delivers, and the warheads have already been launched. Or at least, that’s what the industry wants you to believe, it seems.

Industry insiders and fans alike have preached of the coming apocalypse, and indeed even famed blogger tj_han of Riuva has announced that the end is at hand. Verily, Armageddon is already upon us.

The big corporate dinosaurs are inevitably dying out one by one, and packs of roving otaku, deprived of their traditional prey, are viciously turning on one another. May O-Haruhi-sama have mercy on our cel-shaded souls.

I’m not worried, however. I predicted the coming of the apocalypse, and I’ve been secretly hoarding canned anime and freeze-dried manga in my basement. I’m prepared. I’ve stockpiled enough that I can survive for years without any contact from Japan, without relying on potentially tainted outside sources of moe and GAR.

Sure the going may get tough. I may be forced into subsisting on old episodes of Rozen Maiden, or if I get really desperate, Mai Otome. Fortunately, I know that I’ll never starve. If nothing else, there will always be Naruto.

The reason for this, as we’ve all known for years, is because Naruto isn’t really anime. It’s immune. Like cockroaches, even after all the other shows have gone extinct, it will still be scuttling around.

So the question remains…are you prepared for the coming of the anime apocalypse? And if you could only save 5 shows, which ones would you take?

I’m prepared for the Absolute Destiny Apocalypse.

My series would be revealed when the time comes. :o

I’d save Monster, Mushishi and Ouran host club and use there three to convince others to remake the anime industry. Best save FLCL and Evangelion as well. I’d feel bad other wise. Almost everything else is safe as either manga or light novels.

As a means to prevent the apocalypse, I’d happily pay for a channel(s) that aired subbed only shows fresh from Japan (allowing maybe a weeks delay from the original airing.)

Anime cannot be destroyed because the 5 greatest series have not yet been made!

Ah Dear, The Anime Apocalypse. =/

I would definitely have to save Planetes, Since its just frickin’ brilliant in every sense of the word.
For length and excellence and would keep me amused for days on end. The only answer would have to be the almighty Straw Hat pirates from One Piece.
For my third choice I would also take. . .Hmm. . .Shakugan no Shana or Lucky Star. Arrgh. Shana it is.
The penultimate decision would be Dokuro-chan for the serious lulz.
Number five, The last one. Ghost in the Shell I think.

Haha, it would be like the Ark, where you save the best representatives of important genres, like harem, BL, space, mecha, shounen, drama, love comedy, etc. Then you try to narrow it by picking good series that combine genres.

Only five? You’re evil!

My Picks:
Ojamajo Doremi (my favorite series, and with 214 episodes & 2 movies, plenty to watch.)
Cardcaptor Sakura (because Tomoyo is right, Sakura-chan is the cutest thing ever.)
Princess Tutu (Ahiru is the only one who can rival Sakura’s cuteness.)
Kanon 2006 (for when I need a good cry. Also, pretty animation!)
Ravolutionary Girl Utena (every once in a while, you need a good brain-bleaching.)

In the end, I just picked my Top 5 anime.

The anime apocalypse……..the end of us bloggers lol. Hmmmm, I would pick FLCL (need the funny), Lucky Star (need otakuness, ARIA (Aria shaijou ^^), Shana (tsundere loli is a must), and Potemayo (she’s so cute and Guchuko is awesome).

It’s like every single time I take a break I come back to a new end of the world.

Adolescence of Utena and Kare Kano, do you actually need five?

Of course, if it goes too long I’ll have some Bleach on hold. To kill any love I have for anime left.

Sylon Beta (03:18:21) :

Potemayo would be enough. Years after the Apocalypse, I will revive the cute bioweapon blob things, and create an army of them. And then, I will take the planet. Cries of ‘Honi Honi’ that fill the air, a war cry that strikes fear in the hearts of men, chilling it to the core.

Oh wait, scratch that.

Zeke (15:29:01) :

I would take: Mushi-shi, Akagi, Last Exile, FLCL, & Darker than Black. This is the list of Win, an epic win if you will. :)

Guff UNITED STATES (18:22:50) :

Man Zeke, I’d have to concur that list is quite epic. I’d personally add Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Haruhi, and Ghost in the Shell, as well. Also, it’d be nice to have some Lucky Star to chuckle at; you’ll need something to console your from the smoldering ruin outside your impenetrable compound of win.

Dio Bravo (08:45:22) :

Well, as of RIGHT NOW. I’d think Id have to take the full series I am currently watching, since id like to see how they end.

So Akagi, Shakugan no Shana, Gaogaigar, G Gundam, and Mushishi. (with first runner up Demonbane. i need to get working on finishing these.)

Normally, series like TTGL, or Haruhi, would be there, but im running with stuff i WANT to see that i HAVENt.

D_Blade CANADA (11:28:01) :

I have yet to make my definite list as I am discovering mind-blowing anime series as of now. But my definite choices include Moyashimon (Love that scientific approach and endlessly fun aspect), Tengen Toppai Gurren Lagann (This changed my mind on Mecha… Also lots of philosophy, style and fanservice, etc.), Great Teacher Onizuka (Never gets old, complete randomness and references galore).

The two remaining places have to be filled. I’m hesitating between Bleach (without all those crappy fillers, thank you), Fullmetal Alchemist, Darker than Black, Shakugan no Shana and Lucky Star, among others. Sorry Haruhi, but you don’t even qualify.

I have yet to watch Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Mushishi… (Maybe both of them will get those prized seats… Who knows?

To be continued…

blauereiter (06:17:24) :

Tough, but I’ll go for Akira, GITS, Princess Mononoke, EOE, and Kon Satoshi’s best work, can’t decide which one it is…

Actually, that’s just my favourites list…
