Epic Win Christmas Contest – Become An Epic Winner!

Posted by 0rion on December 13th, 2007 - 5:30 pm

Yatta! It’s our very first contest / prize giveaway here at Epic Win!

No, it’s not a Santa-suited Haruhi. I wish I had that to give away. >_>

It’s been a lot of fun blogging for you guys, I have to say. We hope you all have been enjoying what we write about, as well. Since it’s the Christmas season and all, we thought it would be nice way to celebrate with you all by giving away some cash monies.

We’re always thinking about ways we can improve the quality of the site for you guys, so I thought it might be nice to get opinions from you all on what you think of Epic Win so far, and what you would like to see more of.

I’m especially interested to know what you think of the stuff we’ve blogged about so far. We try to maintain some variety in our content, everything from episode reviews to Japanese news, including some random anime rants, some season reviews and (completely biased) rankings, some tongue-in-cheek satire, some photoblog style tales from Japan, and even a little metablogging.

One thing we really wish we could have done more of is tell our stories from Japan. It’s a fun way of reminiscing and sharing cool photos, while also explaining more about what Japan is really like for those folks who have never been there (which according to our most recent poll is a good 75% of you). So far I’ve only done a couple of posts in that vein, but I’d like to do more.

Before that, however, I thought I should first put it out there to you guys and find out what you want.

Thus the contest as a little incentive! :)

The contest is twofold:

1. We’re coming up on 500 comments, so want to give a nice prize to the glorious 500th commenter! Who knows, it could be in this very thread.

2. I liked Kabitzin’s contest idea for Sea Slug Team, so I’m pirating it. :P

The idea is simple. Just post in this thread the answers to the 4 easy questions below. One commenter will be chosen at random to receive a $30 Amazon gift certificate. Additionally, the person who makes the 500th comment on the site, whether in this post or elsewhere, will also receive a $30 Amazon gift certificate.

The questions are as follows:

1. What is one thing you like about Epic Win?

2. What is one thing you don’t like about Epic Win?

3. What kind of blogging would you like to see more of here at Epic Win?

4. Give one reason why I am so awesome. ;)

P.S. – Don’t forget to put in your vote on the new poll, as well.

Wow, Cash monies. I haven’t seen one of those in so long I’d started to doubt their existence.

Good Luck everyone!

P.S.

Special Thanks to Orion for working on this post; I was in the grip of post finals-catatonic syndrome. Oh sleep, how I’ve missed you.

AS UNITED STATES (17:58:05) :

1. I like the style of this site lol, very sleek and fluid which is easy on the eyes. It’s pretty cool how you can update your site everyday as well, I tried that before and couldn’t do it ^^. I might be able to though if I do episode reviews lol.
2. Hmmmm, what I don’t like ;p, I can be so evil with the answer. Lol, j/k, but seeing something other than anime would be nice, something Japan related wouldn’t stray too far.
3. Same as above, posts other than anime would be nice time to time.
4. You are awesome, how’s about that ^^. You put the time and effort into making great posts, so there’s my reason for that lol.

1. This 0rion guy has terrible taste in anime.
2. This 0rion guy has terrible taste in anime.
3. Anything as long it’s not that 0rion guy Uhh, more wordy analytical stuff. Less pictures. I have no idea, since your blog is really fine as it is right now.
4. Because you have terrible taste.

To be honest with regards to 1 & 2, I don’t really have any complaints, but one thing I like about your blog is the full feeds (they’re not exactly popular). 4 is obviously not a joke.

JRoxas UNITED STATES (18:20:03) :

1. Excellent and entertaining balance between “SERIOUS BUSINESS” and “ROFL”
2. The site layout; the narrow single-column surrounded by a sea of gray is quite unappealing to me. It could just be my super-wide resolution though.
3. I think it’s fine as-is, though a bit more editorial-y or OMG CONTROVERSIAL stuff might be nice.
4. Because of your unbridled honesty.

CCY UNITED STATES (18:21:19) :

You would give away a Santa-suit Haruhi if you had one!?

…actually, scratch that, I would too. (silently herds Nagato out the back door)

Anyway, I like cash bribes and I like your blog, so here goes:

1) I really like the tone of the posts on this site, to put it in a dry, academic matter. It’s a good mix of humor and legitimate commentary (the Hiatus Syndrome post, for example). Plus, the two of you are pretty regular with the posting too.

2) Mm, tricky one. One thing that bugged me while I was checking to see if you ever insulted Kanon was that you have to dig into the ‘archives’ tab to find the Search option. But that’s a minor site quibble.

I haven’t found anything major to gripe about so far, so should I just promise to flame you mercilessly at a later date when (if) you ever mess up? XD

3) Hmm. Some non-anime posts, like you said, would be a nice change of pace. Japan does spark my curiosity, and since it’s something that not a lot of us can blog about, a nice balanced view on it would be interesting. I would like to see what else there is other than Akihabara and overpriced (but still win) merchandise…y’know, without turning into a rabid fanboy. I’m scared of those.

Other than that, I’m a personal fan of “series review” posts; after the first few episodes of a series (where I’m still judging), the episode posts, to me, are mostly irrelevant, unless something really noteworthy happened (i.e. Kaiji 9). The 48 Reasons to Like Lucky Star post was, unsurprisingly, epic win.

Also, I’m a member of Overthinkers Anonymous, so more analytical stuff = cool. If you can make it work with your style and all.

Why is this section the biggest? XD

4) You said you liked Miyuki, you blog Kaiji, and you had the guts to stand against Clannad (even if I did enjoy it). Also, the site name.

(Enough butter for you? )

EDIT: You guys are making me look like a ranting fool. XD

1) Mushishi. Someone actually gives credit for what that masterpiece deserves. (Go Guff!)

2) You haven’t told me your Steam ID for TF2 yet. Oh and those smilies… kinda lame.

3) Erotic literature. And for the love of god, don’t use the two writer format for that. It’d be GAY EPIC FAIL.

4) Blogging regularly. I know how hard that is. And I respect anyone who can do it.

DeathToZippermouth (22:40:43) :

1.) The tag team format. Truly a marvelous idea when you’re running a blog and friends keep wanting to join in. (stares to the side at Dio Bravo and Dominic Raze).

2.) Your swift rise to popularity. Seriously, what does your blog have that mine doesn’t… aside from bitching layout, better update schedule and of course more readers… whine whine whine… (yes, I had to stretch to get this to appear, why?)

3.) Perhaps your thoughts on older series, I guess?

4.) The fact that you not only let Dio and I so shamelessly pirate your tag team style, you in fact encouraged it. Thank you.

IcyStorm UNITED STATES (22:57:08) :

1. The frequent updates =]

2. The lack of Kagami Hiiragi pictures plastered everywhere.

3. Hmm, maybe some more editorial-ish posts and more epic posts such as the 48 Reasons Why Lucky Star Is Awesome.

4. You bring teh lulz and post regularly; for that, you win.

2. One thing I don’t like about Epic Win is its lack of moe.

3. The kind of blogging would you like to see more of here at Epic Win is figure blogging! :O Well, no, just funny Japanese newsy stuff will do.

4. One reason?! Just ONE?! Can I wish for a million wishes? Because one point of awesome is compressed ultra awesome that is stellar and penultimate and transcending of any fathomable measure of awesome in the universe. Quantum computers cannot calculate the level of awesome this blog exudes. Why this blog is awesomer than Haruhi chocolate. Awesomer than Clannad canned bread. Awesomer than Pokemon perfume. It’s criminal.

Doubtful for being the 500th

1. I like how you blog the unique stuffs of anime, and make fun of clannad.

2. I really dont like Guff (jk)

3. More critical blogs of the queer anime that is popular for no reason.

4. You are THE Epic Win

14 12 2007
TheBigN (07:08:37) :

1. The tag team style blogging, especially when the contrast between Ori0n and Guff are very strong. It’s always fun to see differing opinions on the same thing.

2. I want to be more deep than saying something like the layout, but since I can’t think of anything better than that, I’ll stick with that. I’m in a “Please BigN, Don’t Hurt Em’” mood anyways. :P

3. More posts about real-life adventures, since I love that sort of thing.

4. If “I” is Ori0n: You care enough to get involved with the anime blog community, as strange as that term may seem. :3
If “I” is Guff: Working with the whirlwind that seems to be Ori0n. :P

I want my cake now. :)

1. What is one thing you like about Epic Win?
The modesty of the Blogs name.

2. What is one thing you don’t like about Epic Win?
Not enough public angsting over amount of readers, it’s almost like your doing this for fun rather than attention.

3. What kind of blogging would you like to see more of here at Epic Win?
More awesome blogging if such a thing can be achieved, what with you being so handsome and wonderful already. Reviews of whole series are fine as well.

4. Give one reason why I am so awesome.
Samuel L. Jackson gave you lessons in being awesome?

Edit to add;
Being able to edit comments is god to.

DominicRaze (09:08:49) :

*ducks out from DTZ’s Death-Glare*

1) It’s exceedingly random, but it’s also to the point in all it’s posts. I really loved the 12 days of Christmas anime song. I counted lyrics and it matches word for word for the real song (and it’s many filks) and that takes some imagination – which I adore.

2) Every day you guys remind me of anime I’ve yet to SEE!! It’s horrifying!!

3) I love the tag team style, but I would also like to see some multi-blog posting! Hook up with a couple of good writers in some other blogs and link to each others sites mid rant – tag it off and expand the blogging community why not?

4) You’ve inspired DTZ and DioBravo over at WTF to post in a similar style, which really says something about how fun your style is. I’ve even made an Avatar for it… all that’s left is to crack open a certain skull, absorb the brainses and gain their powers!! Wait… I’m Sylar now? O_o

The combination of honesty, humour and intelligence that gives the blog its name…nah, that sounds cliched. The tag-team style is great and is something nobody else has done before. How’s that?

2. What is one thing you don’t like about Epic Win?
You guys get to watch and review stuff before I do.

3. What kind of blogging would you like to see more of here at Epic Win?
I love the anecdotes and Japan-related trivia that you work into the posts…moar photos would be nice too.

1. What is one thing you like about Epic Win?
The tag-team posting. Most anime blogs that have multiple writers usually keep their posts seperated, but here: We get to see [witty] thoughts given at almost the same time, which gives the real impression of teamwork in a blogging team. You and Guff are THE definition of a blogging team.

That, and you guys make me piss my pants the way no one ever had. 8D

2. What is one thing you don’t like about Epic Win?
That I go into big hiatus gaps and you don’t! YOU DAMN BLOGGING VESSELS!!! lol j/k

Ironically, the one thing I don’t *really* like is that most of the opinions posted here are the type of opinions I AGREE with. You need more flame-inducing posts. Post something that criticizes a fandom. More posts that bashes failure of the animu (from the past or otherwise)! Pick a fight with a random animu blogger (TAKE CAUTION!!!).

Okay, maybe not FLAME-INDUCING, but I would like to see a post that goes against popular opinion. :P

3. What kind of blogging would you like to see more of here at Epic Win?
More stories about Japan. i really loved your post detailing your noble journey in Miyajima Island and I’d like to see more. :P

4. Give one reason why I am so awesome.
Blogging regularly and posting bang-worthy Haruhi pics on MY interwebz.

Impz (02:53:51) :

hahaha, nice thingy again. Amazon is ftw!

1. The conversational review style. It is something I am personally trying on my blog.

2. The tight space for the text: I am wondering how you can expand the blog space so that entries do not look as long as they are.

3. Read 1.

4. Ermm, can you use simpler language for a simpleton?

18 12 2007
Hiyuu (04:42:30) :

1. The way you review stuff – Epic Win doesn’t forgo public opinion and force readers to agree, yet doesn’t leave out personal opinions and objections. It’s all a friendly mix that works out for a nice read!

2. The font kinda looks wordy – a little too wordy. Maybe try a font style that doesn’t look like it was meant for an essay.

3. The funny stuff. Everyone can blog about anime and review episodes, but only a few can make funny parodies or crack hilarious jokes while at it. So far, I think there’s plenty of it, but wouldn’t it be nice if there was more

4. Orion misread = Onion. Many anime character designs are like onions. Take the mischv dango and the Moyashimons, they all look like the artist was inspired by onions. Therefore, you are the inspiration for all things that should be made into plush. So there.

2. What is one thing you don’t like about Epic Win?
I’m not on the blogroll  ok j/k lol

Acutally, the font’s too. Yeah I know it’s contradicting with my first answer, but the space between characters and each lines are rather tight.

3. What kind of blogging would you like to see more of here at Epic Win?
Random funny stuff related to anime and tales from Japan, but not too much that it affects the other types of posts. Balance is good

1. The dual style blogging. Having two different people comment on the same portion of the episode is rather nice to have. The reason I read blogs is for the opinions, and I get more “bang for my buck” here.

2. Well, to put it simply, you guys don’t update enough. :|

3. Hm, I guess I’d have to say for you to blog about the less-popular (but not at all less-awesome!) shows like Kaiji and Moyashimon (I know, I know, you can’t really help it at this point) a little more consistently/faster. AFAIK, you’re the only guys who blog Kaiji with a little more than one line of text per episode.
