Congratulations KyoAni for taking a short 1 chapter story arc and turning in into an epic 8 episode trollfest. Although I don’t particularly appreciate this whole catastrophe, I do have to give them props for the sheer chutzpah at being willing to pull a stunt like this, I suppose.
At least they didn’t really troll their viewers by tacking on an Endless Nine episode this week. Oh well, to be fair, one good thing did come out of this whole fiasco… “Kyon-kun, denwa.”
I have to wonder what the thought process was over in Kyoto that made them decide this was a good idea. Some people have speculated about budgetary problems or other behind the scenes issues. I have my own theory, however.
During these difficult economic times, companies all over the world are looking for ways to increase their profitability, and they are checking out what their competitors are doing. KyoAni is certainly no exception. So they look over at Sunrise at see that they are raking in money hand over fist with Code Geass.
But see, Sunrise hates their fans. They hate them with a passion and want them all to suffer. That’s why they made Code Geass R2, after all. And Gundam SEED Destiny. And Mai Otome, for that matter.
And yet the Sunrise fans keep coming back for more punishment over and over and over. Code Geass sales were completely off the charts for a while. So I think KyoAni decided that, since this formula worked so well, they should take a page out of Sunrise’s book and try punishing their own fans a bit. And that is how Endless Eight x8 came to be.
This was my face after the first episode of “The Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi”
And the sad part is, I’ll still be following the series for more weekly punishment now that the Endless Eight story arc is finally over.
C’est la オタク.

The really sad part is, having already read the novels, I wasn’t even waiting to find out the surprise resolution to the story.
Successful KyoAni troll is successful.
This is the best representation of everyone’s feelings towards Endless Eight.
I salute you.
Funny screencaps! XD
I agree with you about “Endless Eight”; even though I was frustrated with it and I’ve already read the novels, I still kept watching and I’m looking forward to the rest of “The Sigh”. Repeating the same story eight times was harrowing to get through, but I suppose it makes the ending all the more epic and it keeps fans talking about it. Personally, if they had to repeat it at all, I think three times would have been enough (First Part 1, then take your pick of Parts 2 through 7, and then Part 8).
Looks like we won’t be seeing “The Disappearance” this season unless the supposed 14 new episode count changes or a new season/movie is revealed.
Whoa! Your face is… kinda cute ^_~ (the first one that is)
I’ve just recently started my Endless Eight quest! Hope I’m still a Haruhi fan after it all =3
oh wow, it all makes sense now! :<
@ Tamad
While I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, I imagine there are quite a few who echo my sentiments on this one. It’s the sort of thing that’s so much more effective to express with pictures instead of words.
@ Yumeka
I don’t mind not seeing the Disappearance this season, I actually prefer seeing the Sighs story arc animated first, as I enjoyed it more.
@ J159
“Whoa! Your face is… kinda cute ^_~ (the first one that is)”
…your face is too close.
The only sigh I heard in episode 20 was my own sigh of relief that Endless Eight didn’t become Endless Nine.
WE’LL ALL BE COMING BACK NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY SCREW WITH US ANYWAY.
LOL funny faces,
i just stopped watching after the 4th time and skipped directly to the 8th.
While I share most of your feelings on the Endless Eight arc (that’s fun to say), I can’t help but find myself highly amused by the whole affair.
If nothing else, it was something that has never been done before (and likely never to be done again considering the reaction).
Furthermore, I admire their dedication. Upon close inspection (and consultation with the scriptures) I noted that each scene, repeated as they were over and over again, was seperately animated w/ newly recorded dialog. Nose to the grindstone indeed.
Or maybe I’m just a glutton for punishment and have fallen prey to their sinister Sunrise tactics (there really might be something to that theory).
Eh, anyway, I just can’t bring myself to share the utter contempt and loathing that most peoples commentary has expressed.
*shrugs*
Also, I think I’ve used up my allotment of parentheses for this month (yep, definitely have).
I couldnt take it anymore after the 5th (or was it the 6th, but who’s really counting) episode and read the novel instead. So yeah, the ending was really meh compared to the torture KyoAni put us through.
Right now I wish we could abduct whichever brilliant mind that came up with this and those who actually agreed with it, dissect their brain and see what really made them to go ahead with 8 Endless 8s.
Or maybe the troll aliens from outer space came and took over KyoAni.
@ fangzhao
The Sighs of Fangzhao? Somehow I get the feeling that story won’t move quite as many book sales.
@ Omisynth
Sad, but true I’m afraid. orz
@ frog212
I actually watched them all the way through, but toward the end I was half watching on one monitor while surfing the web on the other.
@ Tenshi
Yeah, I was actually somewhat impressed that they had uniquely recorded dialogue for each episode rather than just recycling the exact same recorded lines over and over.
And by the way, if that’s your entire monthly allotment of parentheses… I really hope you never become a programmer.
@ Nekonron
I would love to actually hear a statement from KyoAni someday explaining their logic behind doing this. Their decision to do this really does baffle me.
LOL at the pictures! I unequivocally loved CGR2 AND Endless Eight — and as an artist, I would be thrilled at the opportunity to produce something like Endless Eight. I really find it that interesting, creative, and cool, and encapsulating so much of what I love about anime.
lol I actually did that too. It’s the only way to slave through it without falling asleep. I didn’t want to watch everything again but at the same time I didnt want to miss anything new either.
While watching the Endless 8, I first thought why they would torture us so. And after much deliberation I came to only one conclusion that could possibly describe their actions (aside from uber trolling). If we were driven insane by only 8 of the 15,532 repetitions, imagine what Yuki must feel like. We all know Yuki remembers every single repetition but the number is so large it doesn’t become personal. It becomes a statistic. Now that we have a small, small, small, small, small taste of what she has been going through… I guess it was for character development? I can’t find any other reason for this other than to make you sympathize with Yuki.
Though I have to admit I watched every single episode of Endless 8 without any skipping around, and when I watched the final episode I was giddy as a school girl. I had a grin plastered onto my face the rest of the day.
The “Sighs” part of the light novels is when I told myself to give up reading and just wait for the damn shows. It was a terrible read for me, and bored me out of my brains – if indeed this is the part of the literature that has to do with the making of the movie.
@ girl
From an artistic perspective I’m sure it was interesting to create – different outfits, different ways of re-envisioning the scenes, the angles, the cuts, the timing. I imagine it was a uniquely challenging project for director and artists, to tell the same story so many different ways without recycling animation.
…doesn’t mean I have to like it as a viewer, though.
@ Drunut
If anything, the Endless Eight story arc only served to reinforce my perception of Yuki as non-human. No regular person could have handled 500 years of repetition like that without going nuts.
But then, I’ve never really understood what the Yuki fanboys are so excited about to begin with, so maybe it’s just me.
@ ghostlightning
I really liked The Sighs, but that’s mainly on the strength of Kyon’s incessant commentary. At times sarcastic, at times despondent, his tongue in cheek narration never failed to make me chuckle.
“If anything, the Endless Eight story arc only served to reinforce my perception of Yuki as non-human. No regular person could have handled 500 years of repetition like that without going nuts.”
Oh, I’d say the Disappearance of SH pretty much proved she snapped just a teeny-tiny bit.
It’s so ironic that you chose a shot of Kannagi for this, since Kannagi was animated by Yamakan (the former leader of the Haruhi animation team, whose leaving of KyoAni left us with Endless Eight as a result).
