17 different shows from the summer ‘09 anime season, analyzed and ranked from the bottom up.

Disclaimer: These rankings are purely a reflection of our own opinions and tastes, which are admittedly rather different from your average anime fan. Just because we don’t like a particular show doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it. Your mileage may vary, etc etc. However, if you do have a different opinion about a show, by all means post a comment so that people reading have more than one opinion to go by.

Summer often gets a bad rap as the “filler” season in between the generally much more packed spring and fall anime seasons. This season, however, summer boasts an excellent crop of new shows for fans of all different genres. Although I’m ranking these shows numerically according to my favorites, almost all of them are enjoyable in at least some respects.

Almost all.

17. Element Hunters

Send it to hell, Marge, send it to hell.

No seriously. Usually I try to give a series at least 3 or 4 episodes before making a judgment call, but this show had me pulling my hair only minutes into the first episode. I still watched a few episodes so that I can say I’m not making a premature judgment, but man that was torturous.

The plot is something along the lines of:

Earth is in crisis because our precious elements are disappearing! As it turns out, they are being stolen by an evil alternate dimension known as “Nega Earth”! Yes, that’s right. They are coming to earth and stealing our elements. Like, one at a time. An element.

And! And the only way to stop them is to transport teenagers in spandex outfits to Nega Earth to fight and bring back our elements! On account of grown ups can’t go to Nega Earth. No seriously. It’s because of science! Yeah…

So they go to Nega Earth, and there’s lot of emo bullshit and teen angst, and then they fight a monster using strategies that sound like some kind bad science project. And the element is captured in their “Pokedex”. Gotta catch ‘em all.

And everybody lives happily emo after.

16. Fight Ippatsu Juuden-chan

Another typical fanservice fest, and one with an incredibly sketch plot to boot.

Well, maybe I shouldn’t call it “typical”. I understand this series really pushed the envelope in terms of what you can get away with and still be on broadcast television, what with masochism and urination in every episode. Or so I hear anyway. I couldn’t deal with the insipid plot long enough to even find out if that claim is true.

15. Aoi Hana

Yuri. That’s the only term that this show can really be described with, and also its only “redeeming” quality.

If you’re into that you might enjoy it, but beyond that gimmick the plot doesn’t really offer anything interesting or substantive. The characters are incredibly one-dimensional, and not in a good “one-dimensional funny trope character” way. And did I mention that the one dimension is yuri?

Sigh…

14. Kanamemo

This series is so ridiculous and creepy on so many levels, I can’t even begin to describe it. The constant loli yuri fetishism was emphasized to a degree that I found downright disturbing, and the plot alternated between cringe-inducing awful and yawn-inducing boring.

The only bright ray of sunshine were the vocal performances of Kugimiya Rie (Shana, Sanzenin Nagi, Louise), who is practically a requirement these days in any series with a loli tsundere, and Mizuhara Kaoru (Misao from Lucky Star), who really needs to get more roles, because her voice is incredibly awesome.

13. Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Sigh. I really wanted to like this show. I tried very hard.

The show has most annoying cast of characters I’ve seen since Code Geass R2, which is saying a lot. The dialogue comes across as extremely forced, the characters are all wholly uninteresting, and most of the plot and pacing feels as though the scriptwriters just grabbed random text from the game and stitched it together slapdash.

12. Umi Monogatari

I actually like this show quite a bit, surprisingly. It’s fairly typical magical girl fare with a side of fanservice, but it’s delivered with solid animation, an excellent soundtrack, and a rather tongue-in-cheek approach that makes it a bit more memorable than most similar shows.

11. Sora no Manimani

A predictably slow tale of highschool life and budding romance, Sora no Manimani won’t knock anybody’s socks off. It does, however, manage to provide a good amount of random humor, some cool astronomy lessons, and the occasional heartwarming moment.

10. NEEDLESS

This show is trying to be Gurren Lagann so hard it hurts. Not only does their logo look nearly identical, the main characters bear a very suspicious resemblance to Kamina and Simon, albeit in appearance only.

The sad part, as much as I hate NEEDLESS for having a name in all caps and being essentially one huge rip-off, it’s actually a halfway decent series. The production values are above average and the show features a colorful cast of super-powered blowhard badasses beating the crap out of each other. There was supposedly some kind of larger plot involved, but I wasn’t particularly interested in it, and judging from the way the show progresses I kind of get the feeling that the production team wasn’t either.

9. Zan Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei

Season one of Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei was legendary. Season two was lesser, but still hilarious. Season three seems to be lowering the bar even further. While still vintage Shinbou comedy, this season is really missing a lot of the magic that made this show great in the past.

SHAFT seem to have their best animation squad committed to Bakemonogatari right now, so the visual caliber of the series has taken a noticeable dive. Beyond that, however, the humor just doesn’t seem quite as fresh as it as was in previous seasons. For better or for worse, the format is exactly the same as it always has been, but the jokes are less original and the scenarios less creative.

That’s not to say it’s bad; by no means. I still watch SZS and laugh at it. Compared to some of the other awesome shows in this season’s line-up, however, I have a hard time justifying giving it a higher spot.

8. GA – Geijutsuka Art Design Class

GA is this season’s obligatory “slice-of-life, day to day adventures of a group of high school girls” anime. I’m pretty sure that Japan is legally required to make sure that at least one show like this is airing at all times.

As a typically slow-paced slice of life show, it features the usual cast of unusual moe characters doing silly things in silly ways. Given the subject matter of the series, the natural inclination is to compare it to Hidamari Sketch, and in that respect I’d say it measures up extremely well. Not only are the production values much better than Hidamari, GA has more consistent humor. It also puts much more of an emphasis on (gasp) the actual art and related artistic endeavors of the cast, so it’s both entertaining and educational.

I’ve enjoyed Geijutsuka Art Design Class so much, in fact, that I went out to the local Kinokuniya and bought up the tankouban collections of the original 4-koma series the anime is based on.

7. Taishou Yakyuu Musume

This is the real sleeper hit of this season.

Set in 1925, during the transitional Taishou period in Japanese history, this show follows the misadventures of a group of school girls as they try to form their own baseball team and compete on even terms with the boys. The story starts off extremely slowly, but quickly develops into an endearing tale of failure, success, perseverance, and personal growth that really epitomizes the Japanese spirit of teamwork.

I’m a huge fan of jidaigeki, or Japanese period dramas, and Taishou Yakyuu Musume has quickly become one of my favorites in this sort of genre because of its slice-of-life approach to storytelling, as well as its interesting progressive perspective on the changing role of women in society during this pivotal period in Japanese history.

For more info, check out 2DT’s great write-up about the series.

6. Princess Lover

I was actually expecting Princess Lover to be terrible, mainly because of the name, as well as the number of overgenerously proportioned females featured in the promo art. I’ve ended up been pleasantly surprised by this series, fortunately.

Make no mistake, this show is completely ridiculous, but that just serves to make it incredibly hilarious. The story of a young man who is taken in by his incredibly rich grandfather when his parents pass away, Princess Lover covers everything from school hijinks at Yuppie Academy to random international intrigue. It doesn’t shy away from the fanservice, but it also manages to do it in a sort of tongue-in-cheek manner that doesn’t turn me off from the series.

I also have to give them mad props for including an awesome Kaiji parody, as well as the many other lulzy moments of the hot springs episode. The director is just having way too much fun making this series.

Also the grandfather is voiced by Wakamoto Norio (Emperor Britannia, Vicious, Narrator from Hayate no Gotoku), so how can you not enjoy this show, really?

5. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya S2

I don’t know which is more surprising to me – that I’m actually ranking a Haruhi season as low as number 5, or that I’m still loyal enough to have it this high on the list considering everything that has happened this season.

Just for reference, by the way, the reason I’m including it in the rankings this season is because last season was almost entirely recap material, and thus I skipped it in my Spring Rankings post.

In any case, I still enjoy the Haruhi franchise, and while the hype has died down considerably and the newer episodes aren’t anything special, the series still manages to deliver consistent, predictable fun. As long as Haruhi dominates all life, Mikuru cowers, and Kyon facepalms and provides his characteristic dry narration, I’ll continue to be well entertained by this show for a long time to come.

For more Haruhiism, nobody does Haruhi posts better than Jason Miao.

4. Bakemonogatari

If you’re a regular reader you know that we’ve already said quite a bit about Bakemonogatari, some of it negative and some positive. Just like Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei, this series is classic SHAFT x SHINBO, with all of the quirks and visual oddity that that combination fosters. As a result, it probably will not appeal to everyone.

That said, if you can get past the odd visuals, even weirder music, and even more bizarre characters, this show is a real gem. The visual style, however, while creative, just serves to set the stage. Dialogue is really the soul of this show.

The incredibly clever banter between Araragi and the various supporting characters is witty and sarcastic, at times innuendo laden, and always off the wall. It really makes it fun to watch, and paired with all the kooky audiovisual trappings serves as a textbook case of surreal, wacky humor.

Add in the unique wit and charm of Bakemonogatari’s leading lady, Senjougahara Hitagi, and it’s no wonder that this “Senjougahara Fascination” craze has started to dominate the otaku mindshare.

To supplement your Bakemonogatari crazy, I recommend checking out Kurogane’s posts on the subject, as well as our summary.

3. CANAAN

After a ton of initial hype surrounding this Type-Moon produced series, it seems like many people felt somewhat let down by CANAAN. I think most of the disappointment stems largely from the fact that the anime tries to cultivate a very “serious business” vibe in the beginning, but then quickly shows its true colors as a somewhat goofy, if beautifully animated, action series.

That said, I think CANAAN is brilliant at what it does. If you’re looking for a show with a moody, gritty realism to it, CANAAN is probably not your show. If you just want to see awesome gunfights and have no interest in character exposition, CANAAN is probably not your show. If all you’re interested in is yuri-goggle fodder… well ok, CANAAN might still be your show.

Ultimately, however, CANAAN’s appeal doesn’t rest on it’s action scenes or any potential yuri-bait that may or may not exist. It’s about the characters and the way they somehow come together to create a hilarious, quirky, and entertaining story that is greater than the sum of its parts.

For more on this series, Kabitzin has the best episode summaries. We’ve got several CANAAN related posts here at Epic Win, as well.

2. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

I simply have no words to adequately describe this series. It’s gone beyond all my expectations, pulled relentlessly at my heartstrings, and spun a fascinating tale about courage, cowardice, hope, and despair.

Most disaster films really try to play up the spectacle of a disaster for entertainment value. Many of them try to play up some kind of romance subplot. And unsurprisingly, they’re mostly pretty terrible.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 strays away from the traditional disaster flick style of presentation for something much more down to earth (so to speak). Focused on the story of two children caught in the quake far from home, and the woman who helps guide them back, this series is about a surprisingly simple and personal story that portrays the very human reactions that we all exhibit when the world we know breaks apart. It’s a story about hope through the most despairing of circumstances, and persevering through difficulty with the promise of a brighter future.

I really just can’t properly convey how awesome this show is. So instead let me refer you to someone much more qualified to do that, who has written extensively about this series and its many ups and downs.

1. Spice & Wolf II

Spice & Wolf is a rare kind of story. It’s one in which there are no grand large scale plots, no clear beginnings or endings. It can’t even properly be called a romance story. And yet, it is exactly that lack of many normal or stereotypical elements that makes Spice & Wolf a very unique and enjoyable tale.

I’ve been a fan of the novels and the manga that inspired this anime for a long time. The first season of the anime, although lacking in a few areas, was brilliant and captured most of what I liked about the series. This second is now following in its footsteps, except now under the direction of a new studio and with a larger budget it’s become better in every aspect.

Horo and Lawrence’s hilarious yet heartwarming hot-and-cold relationship is endlessly entertaining, and the rich dialogue the show features reveals an incredible depth and uniqueness in its multi-faceted protagonists that is rarely matched.

For more on Spice & Wolf, check out DarkMirage’s review, or Martin’s excellent write-up.

Congratulations KyoAni for taking a short 1 chapter story arc and turning in into an epic 8 episode trollfest. Although I don’t particularly appreciate this whole catastrophe, I do have to give them props for the sheer chutzpah at being willing to pull a stunt like this, I suppose.

At least they didn’t really troll their viewers by tacking on an Endless Nine episode this week. Oh well, to be fair, one good thing did come out of this whole fiasco… “Kyon-kun, denwa.”

I have to wonder what the thought process was over in Kyoto that made them decide this was a good idea. Some people have speculated about budgetary problems or other behind the scenes issues. I have my own theory, however.

During these difficult economic times, companies all over the world are looking for ways to increase their profitability, and they are checking out what their competitors are doing. KyoAni is certainly no exception. So they look over at Sunrise at see that they are raking in money hand over fist with Code Geass.

But see, Sunrise hates their fans. They hate them with a passion and want them all to suffer. That’s why they made Code Geass R2, after all. And Gundam SEED Destiny. And Mai Otome, for that matter.

And yet the Sunrise fans keep coming back for more punishment over and over and over. Code Geass sales were completely off the charts for a while. So I think KyoAni decided that, since this formula worked so well, they should take a page out of Sunrise’s book and try punishing their own fans a bit. And that is how Endless Eight x8 came to be.

This was my face after the first episode of “The Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi”

And the sad part is, I’ll still be following the series for more weekly punishment now that the Endless Eight story arc is finally over.

C’est la オタク.

One thing I’ve always liked about KyoAni is that they never skimp when it comes to outfits. In fact, this episode alone has Haruhi & crew sporting a total of 12 different outfits, which is more clothing variation than you get over the course of some entire series. Except for Yuki, that is, who wears her normal school uniform in every single scene except the Obon festival.

And of course, every single one of Itsuki’s outfits is either completely flaming or totally preppy. Yes sir, par for the course with this show.

Speaking of which, it really seemed like Itsuki stepped up his game in this episode. Whatever that “game” might be. I’m trying not to think about it too hard.

I believe the “game” in question is officially referred to as “extreme feminizing”, in which the practitioner in question makes unnecessarily girly hand gestures in everyday speech while moving uncomfortably close to other males. Points are awarded for awkwardness, style, and flamboyant dancing.

/facepalm

“Your face is too close!”

Fortunately, one beneficial side effect of Itsuki being Itsuki is that we get to see Kyon go into freak out mode. We even finally got to hear his signature line “Your face is too close!” Come to think of it, we’ve had to wait 3 whole episodes to hear him use that one. Come on, KyoAni, quit slackin’.

“This pink bow is just so me!”

Never not flaming.

Just…holy Moses. There are exactly ZERO situations, narrative or otherwise, which would warrant a full half-turn “jazz hand” extension. Goddamn you, Itsuki.

Gotta love Kyon’s shirt with nothing but a giant up arrow.

It seems like this week’s episode has really stepped the animation quality just across the board, which makes sense considering that K-On has ended and undoubtedly some of staff from that project have been shifted back to working on Haruhi. Now if only there was a better source of RAWs. u_u;

Have to agree with you on the animation; it appears as though Kyo-Ani is back to form. Why this was ever marginalized in favor for K-On is beyond me but as I’ve yet to complete the series I’ll reserve any formal judgments and just content myself with needless grumbling.

A bit of random Mikuru fanservice is always welcome, especially considering that this week has been an all Itsuki special otherwise.

Not sure if want.

I love Kyon’s reaction when Haruhi gives Mikuru permission to wear the frog suit “whenever she wants”. He goes through this whole range of conflicted facial expressions that says he’s trying to decide whether this is, in fact, a good thing or not.

I’m going to have to say that I prefer meido-fuku to the Frog-suit but hey, to each his own.

One of the more subtle effects that I really liked in this episode was the way the color palette slowly drained away as the episode progressed. While the episode started with very vibrant colors, it becomes more and more muted throughout the episode.

Towards the end a nice sepia filter gives the “end of the summer” meeting a hazy, somewhat surreal quality that helps reflect the feeling of deja vu and helplessness of the cast as they consider how to break out of the cycle.

By the time we reach the final scene at the close of the two week period, the scene is almost completely monochrome.

There’s also heavy use of vignettes and an increasingly narrow depth of field as the episode moves towards its conclusion that gives a very ethereal, and progressively dreamlike character to the visuals as Kyon gets closer to REM status. Very cool. As expected of KyoAni.

A timid Mikuru is fine too. Wait… that’s all the time.

Definitely have to agree with Kurogane that one of the funniest moments was Mikuru’s worried monologue:

“Also, Mikuru going “Uuu… Lemme think… I have continued to use classified information to contact the future or to do classified information… Urr. I only feel something is wrong when I have had no contact from classified information for a week. And then classified information… Makes me very worried, so I tried to use classified information and the answer was classified information… Uuu… Waa! Whatever should I do…” was hilarious. And jealous Kyon too.”

I’m pretty sure this week might have set a new record for most uses of the phrase “kinsoku jikou” (classified information) ever in a single episode.

So ronery?

I really loved this shot of Yuki as she sat poolside; it had a really interesting cinematographic effect. Yuki usually looks so listless and emotionless most of the time so the task of making such a stoic figure appear bored, rather them contemplative, would be quite challenging.

An excellent quality of KyoAni’s character design is the eye detail, and with just the subtle color change of Yuki’s eyes we see the reflection of the starkly blue pool water. The intriguing thing is, Yuki’s soft lavender eyes have such a sharp contrast to the azure blue of the water that it produces an effect similar to a rack-focus and draws your attention away from her face and into the reflection.

So, in a strange way the vibrant color reflecting in Yuki’s eyes has the opposite effect of a standard focus-pull. It diverts your attention away from the scene and makes her appear even more detached than usual. All right, sorry about that, “worthless art-graduate student” hat is coming off.

At any rate, Haruhi is back on track and KyoAni’s chops are thoroughly robust. About freakin’ time guys…sheesh.

Also, it would be remiss of me to not point out Calawain’s astute observation as a fellow Groundhog Day fan:

“That’s a hell of a Groundhog Day. Or for those younger readers who watch more anime then older American movies, where are you K1?! On second thought, you people should all go watch the movie Groundhog Day if you haven’t. It’s classic cinema dammit. Damn kids these days.”

I’m glad I’m not the only one to come out yelling at all those damn kids that won’t get off my e-lawn. No appreciation for classic film these days. Sheesh. =P

But seriously, surely KyoAni sees the potential for a Groundhog Day style re-imagining of the Endless Eight story arc? How epic would it be if Kyon just started pulling more and more ridiculous stunts with each successive reset?

“Hey Kyon, hurry up we’re going to the pool!”

“Listen bitch, I’m tired of your meddling. How you ’bout you get Itsuki to drive you to the pool whilst I kidnap Yuki and Mikuru for some classified information and classified information. If we’re feeling really adventurous, we might even try classified information. What do you have to say to that Miss Suzumiya? Where is your god now, huh? Oh wait…”

Ah well, we can dream can’t we?

Also, I have to say I was a little bit surprised that KyoAni decided to drag this chapter out into a third episode. There’s not really much material left in the “Endless Eight” chapter, so I wonder if they’re just going to really take their time with it, or if they plan to transition from the end of this chapter into another chapterin the same episode

Guess we’ll have to wait a few more days to find out.^_^

After a few weeks of re-run action, now we’re finally back to new Haruhi animation! And according to the broadcast schedule, we’re going to get mostly fresh material from here on out.

Of course the first notable thing in this episode is the new OP. Perhaps I’ve just been spoiled by all the amazing OPs Kyoto Animation has put together over the years, but I was a bit disappointed by this one. While the animation is a lot of fun, the song itself is decidedly meh.

And what’s KyoAni’s sudden obsession now with group running? Did they suddenly get tired of making dancing animus and decide to switch to something a little easier on the animators?

Have to concur with your observations; the OP is decidedly underwhelming.

Actually I kind of enjoyed the whole SOS-Dan roster introduction in that it captured some of that Cowboy Bebop kind of flavor, with the glaring exception that “Tank!” is one of my favorite OPs of all time, and the current Haruhi OP is an entirely generic J-rock anthem. Oh well…

Swimsuit check! No real surprises, though.

Haruhi of course has a sexy bikini on. Yuki’s wearing a one piece that for all intents and purposes is basically a school swimsuit, also par for the course with this show and its target demographic. And Mikuru fills out the mizugi roster with a frilly yellow one piece, no surprise there either. How terribly predictable. At least Itsuki didn’t show up wearing a skintight speedo, as I was half afraid he might.

Oh yeah, also had a good laugh at Haruhi just running around picking up random lolis.

Jiiiiiiiiiiiiii~

A bit of fuel for the Yuki fanboys to fan the flames with – Kyon secretly checks her out while Haruhi isn’t looking, and then decides that perhaps spending summer vacation this way isn’t so bad after all.

Hmm…or is he actually looking at Itsuki o_0;

Sweet Moses, I hope not… especially with such a bevy of alternatives, specifically Yuki. I must confess I can sympathize with her decision to remain in the shade.

My skin is so hideously pallid that I usually just forego going outdoors altogether, so as to avoid the burning orb of punishment in the sky that scourges the summer months.

Yukatas = WIN

You know, no matter how cliche it may be, I never seem to get tired of “summer festival” anime episodes. Probably because I never get tired of real life Japanese matsuri, either. Really, I don’t think I’ve ever met a matsuri I didn’t like, and probably never will.

The amazing food, good sake, the girls in yukatas, the cheesy games, the fireworks, and just the general spirit of revelry and relaxation all combine to make for great fun and great memories. That’s why, no matter how many times they beat this particular dead horse, I’ll still enjoy it. It’s just very natsukashii nostalgic all around.

I never really understood the penchant for various and sundry anime to have festival episodes, that is, until I went to the Nikko Festival a few years ago. Gracious… just… FOOD.

Indescribably scrumptious foodstuffs at every stall for next to nothing, with the added benefit of amusing games, fireworks, and fascinating cultural garb. Really what’s not to like?

“Are cicadas edible? I wonder if you can make tempura out of them?”

Next is on to the cicada hunting! And not content to dominate Lucky Star conversation, now random and bizarre food discussions have invaded Haruhi as well! I’ll tell you one thing though, if you really could make good cicada tempura, the days of those wretched insects as a nationwide pest problem would be over before you could say “eaten into extinction”.

I mean, we’re talking about the country that drove sea urchins, of all creatures, to the brink of extinction just because they happen to taste good in sushi rolls.

After stumbling through (in the original Japanese) the cicada-catching chapter in Yotsuba&, my fear of the creatures grew considerably. Along with their unholy cacophony and terrifying enormity, now we’re talking about cooking the damned things? The mind reels.

I choose you Kabutomushi!

Speaking of which, this episode really reminded me that bugs in Japan truly are, in fact, incredibly huge and will try to eat you if given half a chance!

Oh yeah, also cicadas are deafeningly loud in real life; I can’t imagine going out to hunt them like that without equipping some kind of hearing protection. I daresay they’re probably the number 3 leading cause of noise pollution in the world today, right behind Rush Limbaugh and Spinal Tap.

Of course, Haruhi wins the competition. At only a mere 12 cicadas though, it’s clear that even she is no match for the legendary Yotsuba + Jumbo cicada catching gattai.

Mikuru apparently was only able to catch one lone cicada that appears to be dying of terminal carapace cancer.

“Catch and release!”

“That was very touching, but aren’t you the one who went out and caught them all in the first place?”

As always, Kyon comes right out and says out loud what everybody was thinking.

Best moment of the episode for me was definitely Mikuru’s reaction when the worm landed on her. That scream she let loose was awesome, almost as if Yuko Goto slipped out of character for a moment and back into Gotouza-sama mode from Lucky Star.

All in all I found this episode very fun to watch; Haruhi is at its best when the story revolves around Haruhi instigating ridiculous and hilarious activities with Kyon providing sarcastic narration. Of course, I’m still waiting for certain plots developments related to the Endless Eight story arc that will hopefully be forthcoming next week, but this kind of laidback slice-of-life-ish sort of episode is just fine as is.

Also, although I didn’t comment on this previously, I do definitely think that the animation quality so far has been surprisingly hit-or-miss. It doesn’t help that the RAWs I’ve been watching suck, but nevertheless I can definitely feel that the animation quality isn’t quite up to the standards I’ve come to expect from KyoAni. It doesn’t particularly impact my enjoyment of the story, but I do feel it could have been better with a more generous animation budget.

Although the animation quality is noticeably poorer, it still isn’t significant enough for me to not be thrilled at the prospect of more Haruhi. Also, I think a nice slice-of-life-ish introduction to the new eps was a good call on KyoAni’s part. Good stuff, and fun to watch, makes me think summertime might be worth the malevolent sunshine afterall.
